One of my favorite discoveries during my first couple of months as Governor is just how different our Rotary clubs are.
Some are large and structured. Others are small and informal. Some meet over lunch; others after work. Some love traditions that have been part of their club for decades. Others are experimenting with entirely different ways of bringing people together.
And I'm increasingly convinced that's a good thing.
Our Rotary Town Hall Conversations are a chance to hear stories and ideas from Rotarians around District 5400 and then join the conversation yourself.
We've held two Town Halls so far, exploring lessons from a year of district leadership with IPDG Kathy Buck and, most recently, how the Boise-East Rotary Club intentionally reimagined its club experience around meaningful service.
Each year, the Burley Rotary Club brings local businesses, community members, and Rotarians together for its largest community service project: providing backpacks and school supplies to children throughout the Cassia County School District.
The project addresses a significant need close to home. More than half of the district’s elementary students have been classified as students from low-income families. For many local households, the added expense of preparing children for a new school year can create a real financial strain. As a result, some students arrive at school without the basic supplies they need to participate fully in the classroom.
District 5400 is excited to announce that we are launching a New Generations Service Exchange (NGSE) program!
NGSE provides young professionals, typically ages 18–30, with an opportunity to experience another culture while developing professional skills, building friendships, and participating in meaningful service. Exchanges can range from two weeks to three months, depending on the interests and opportunities of the participant and host.
For the third consecutive year, the Rotary Club of Meridian was joined by Rotarians from across the District to host a BBQ for the RYLA camper on Friday July 31st. The BBQ is a welcoming party where RYLA camp leaders and Rotarians greet RYLA campers with the goal to kick off their camp experience with joyful moments and a shared meal. RYLA is about Rotarians working with youth in leadership development, an intensive training program for high schoolers who are going to be juniors and seniors, chosen for their potential leadership abilities.
The Bahamas could face a dramatically different future by 2050 as rising seas, stronger hurricanes, and worsening drought reshape island communities. Barry Rassin sounded the alarm in 2018—and after the devastation of Hurricane Dorian, his message carries even greater urgency.
